Swimming Fiji president Ben Rova (pictured) said the association was more than proud of the performances by their swimmers at the Tokyo Olympics despite a heavily marred preparation season due to the pandemic.
“They had overcome a lot and to put in such remarkable performances is all we could ask of them and we are so proud,” Rova said.
Cheyenne Rova set a seasonal best time finishing third in her heat of the women’s 50 metre freestyle with a time of 27.11 seconds and earlier, compatriot Taichi Vakasama finishing fourth in the first heat of men’s 200 metre backstroke with a time of 2 minutes 17.33 seconds.
Rova said both athletes thought they could do better but that the association and the nation were proud of them nonetheless.
“As an athlete, they would have loved to pull a better result, but depending on the circumstances and what they had been through, we are happy for what they have achieved in Tokyo.”
Rova said next for the swimmers was a short break before preparing for next years’ Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, England.
