The Ministry of Health (MOH) will recognise results of COVID-19 tests run by people on their own if they use any of the personal test kits (PTK) approved and listed by the World Health Organization (WHO), says Health Ministry permanent secretary Dr James Fong.

He said this while responding to queries on whether there were PTKs approved for use by the MOH after some PTKs were advertised for sale by medical clinics.

He said the MOH would only recognise results from PTKs on the WHO list.

Nasese Private Hospital medical director Dr Virgilio de Asa was approached for his professional opinion on PTKs and he said several of these kits were available for purchase but people should only buy those approved by the ministry and the WHO.

“One should be careful whether the particular rapid antigen test meets the standard of the WHO or the European Commission directorate-general for health as to the sensitivity and specificity of the antigen tests or has been authorised for use by MOH,” he said.

The list can be viewed on The Fiji Times social media platforms.
