The drastic effect of the COVID-19 pandemic to local businesses has not prevented Shailendra Chand from opening his new eatery in the heart of Lautoka City.

The Indian Thali Restaurant located along Namoli Avenue was officially opened to food lovers in the Sugar City yesterday.

Mr Chand said he felt the need to employ 11 of his staff after witnessing the struggles people continued to go through as a result of the current health crisis.

He said this latest family investment cost him $40,000.

“I signed the agreement to open this restaurant before COVID-19 and have been waiting for some months and I decided to open it now because my staffs were home so at least I could provide them some work,” Mr Chand said.

“I currently employ 11 paid staff and some plied their trade in the tourism industry.

“I also want to take a challenge and get this business open and running because there are people who love takeaway and restaurant meals.”

After seeing the success of his first investment which opened more than two years ago, the Lautoka businessman decided to venture into his other business.

He also owns Baking Masters, a pastry shop located just opposite the newly-opened eatery.

The new restaurant which specialises in varieties of Indian and Chinese dishes is currently operating on takeaways only because of health restrictions.

It also boasts a wine and dine section and can cater up to 100 people. A low-key official opening was held to mark the newest investment in Lautoka City.
