Last Friday Veniana Vakarau was sitting outside a supermarket in Nausori trying to sell food packs prepared by her family.

She said she knew the effort it took to put the packs together and she also knew her family was depending on whatever she would earn.

Ms Vakarau was hopeful people queuing up outside to buy groceries would provide her with some business.

“It’s very hard to sell anything because a lot of people are not working now,” she said.

“I have to try and sell enough to buy groceries and pay our rent of $350.” She said she was only able to sell 30 out of the 50 packs prepared.

“Sometimes, I cannot buy groceries so my relatives in the village help us by giving root crops and other vegetables.

“I have been selling food packs for the past 15 years and this year is the worst it has ever been.”
