‘Any publicity is good publicity’: Ricky Stuart apologises to angry netballers but can’t resist a second swipe

Listen to this article:

Ricky Stuart has apologised to the Australian netball community after it responded angrily to comments from the Canberra Raiders coach that suggested the sport wasn’t ‘tough’.

But while Stuart clarified on Friday that he respected netball and said all sports are tough, he delivered a little parting jab by saying he hoped netball had enjoyed the media attention.

“As [the late manager] John Fordham once said to me, ‘any publicity is good publicity, as long as they’re spelling your name right’. I hope netball take it as good publicity for them,” Stuart said.

The controversy bubbled up on Thursday when current and former Super Netball players slammed comments made by Stuart the previous evening.
