On April 14 1984, The Fiji Times reported the opening of the new bridge in Lami that was featured on its front page.
It was opened to traffic and also marked the completion of the Suva-Deuba highway.
In his speech, the then Director of Road Transport, Fred Cobb, said it was a day all travellers from Suva to Navua had been waiting for.
Works on the bridge had started six years earlier but had to be abandoned because the embankment was sinking.
The construction cost of the bridge was $160,000.
