TEACHERS of Nakavika Primary School in the interior of Namosi used to travel far to access internet and spent about $80 in travel expenses to update the Fiji Education Management Information System (FEMIS).

But with the launch of the Vodafone Fiji Ltd satellite community WiFi in Nakavika Village this week, school headteacher Luse Hotchin said they could now access internet from the school.

The school in the district of Wainikoroiluva is managed by five teachers and has a roll of 83 students.

“Before, we had to travel to Namosi Secondary School just to access internet so we could update FEMIS,” she said.

“Most of the time, the teachers would fork out money from their own pockets to pay for the internet.” She said Vodafone had made their work easier with WiFi installed at the village hall.

“Some teachers would travel to Suva or Navua to update FEMIS.

“We had to find a way to update FEMIS because it was mandatory from the Education Ministry, if not we would be terminated.”

Vodafone Fiji Ltd chief marketing officer Rajnesh Prasad said the satellite-powered community WiFi was a first in Fiji and the Pacific.
