THE Minister for Education, Rosy Akbar, personally thanked members of the Lautoka Golf Club which has some students who are members and players, for giving their time to raise funds for victims of tropical cyclones Yasa and Ana.

The cyclones left behind millions of dollars of damage to Fijian infrastructure, especially schools.

When most sporting organisations had been organising tournaments after the lifting of COVID-19 sanctions and cyclone disruptions on sports, Lautoka Golf Club members had been fundraising to help the cyclone victims.

This won the commendation of Akbar, who stopped over last Saturday to receive the club’s donation.

She was returning from overseeing damage to schools in Vanua Levu.

“Thank you for taking your time to contribute to the worthy cause,” Akbar said.

“Everyone is trying to help their fellow Fijians and on behalf of the Prime Minister, we thank you for your support.”

The donation was handed over after the Ratsun Nadi Airport Apartment Hotel-sponsored Pro-Am championship to celebrate the Chinese New Year.

Club chairman of trustees Raymond Singh thanked Akbar, saying “In the club’s 90 year history, she is the first woman minister to grace LGC.

“The main purpose of the club was to hand over a cheque for $5200 to go towards the Prime Minister’s TC Yasa Relief Fund. An added bonus of another $1000 was given by Fiji FA’s newly appointed Lautoka Football Association president Abdul Kaiyum Rafiq to make the tally of $6200.”
