MINISTER for Economy Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum said there would be no salary cuts for civil servants.

He said the Government pays about $1.1 billion for civil service wages and this was part of its expenditures.

“Government made a consensus decision, our Prime Minister was very much keen about this that we not actually give a cut to civil service because you know there’s a lot of demands in place for civil service, in particular, some ministries more than others,” he said

“We also view that a lot of civil servants actually provide a particular family assistance to those family members who actually may have become unemployed from the private sector.”

Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said civil servants needed to make sure they did not slacken off and must ensure they came up with new ideas.

“Our policy is not to do that and hopefully our policy is not to do that because that’s the rationale behind that but everyone needs to play their part.”
