THE Fiji National Provident Fund (FNPF) is pushing for more voluntary membership as the informal sector becomes a driving force of the economy.

The fund joined forces with the International Labour Organization, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO), United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) to host a series of meetings in Nadi this week to discuss the increasing economic contribution of the informal sector.

FNPF general manager member services Alipate Waqairawai said their focus had always been on the formal sector, however, this changed since COVID-19.

“We are now seeing that we really need to focus and target the voluntary membership because of the increasing number of people moving into the formal sector so that a large number of people that are employed in this sector do not miss out on saving for their future,” he said.
