Seventeen kindergarten students in Wainadoi had to use the verandah of a house in the area on the first day of school last week because there was no classroom.

Concerned parent Monika Prasad said it was sad to see kindergarten children learning in such an environment.

“The learning environment is not safe for children because of OHS issues,” she said.

“There are no chairs and desks, the children have to sit on a mat outside the verandah when the house is vacant.”

Another parent, Fazleen Nisha, raised the same sentiments, adding for low income earners it was the only option they had because there are no other kindergartens in the area.

Kindergarten school president Moireen Chand said the school was registered under the Education Ministry.

She said students had been studying in that kind of environment since 2009.

She said their efforts to acquire a piece of land to construct proper classrooms for the students with the authorities landed on deaf ears.

“We even don’t want any fund from the Government and the ministry. We just want a piece of land to build the kindergarten since there is no kindergarten school in our area.

“I don’t know what all I can do because we have given all the proposals to the ministry and actions have not been taken.

“We need to have answers now because we have been given excuses that it is going to happen, we will come back to you.”

Questions sent to the Minister for Education Rosy Akbar last week remained unanswered when this edition went to press last night.
