The 13th Fiji Bitter Wairiki Sevens has grown bigger this year with increased number of teams participating in the rugby, netball and volleyball competitions.

As a result, tournament co-ordinator Iowane Gade said they had increased the tournament period to four days.

“This is the first time to include four days in this tournament and it’s simply to cater for the increased number of teams,” he said.

“The competition has also become tougher with the rugby skills of players getting better every year.

“We have all the top rugby teams which has attracted a huge crowd and we’re positive that some players could be scouted by the national sevens coach, Gareth Baber.” Gade said they had also used a second ground at Waiyevo to cater for the games.

“This tournament has benefited many communities, especially the people of Taveuni and the parish in Wairiki, as facilities are properly built to cater for this tournament.

“We have 48 senior rugby teams, 32 for U21, 49 netball teams, 20 volleyball teams and 16 women’s teams.

“So far this tournament has been successful and we thank our sponsors for assisting us over the past years.”

The Fiji Bitter Wairiki 7s carnival continues today and ends with the finals tomorrow.
