Out of 20 deaths recorded by the Fiji Police Force this year, 16 were related to noncommunicable diseases (NCDs).

This was revealed during the Fiji Police Force Remembrance Day yesterday. During the official ceremony, Speaker of Parliament Ratu Epeli Nailatikau said NCDs was a worrying trend in the force.

Ratu Epeli said police officers were constantly under public scrutiny and often had to bear the brunt of criticism from people who did not fully appreciate their work.

“There is always a high level of expectation from the public. Because the public demand nothing but the best from you all and you have to deliver,” he said.

He said stress of work could have multiple effects on an officer’s work and personal life. “The impacts of these challenges are often reflected in service delivery and community or public expectations.

It is crucial that we have a supportive network behind the force, from senior officers and management to families and friends.”

Ratu Epeli said the day was a time for reflection and appreciation of the sacrifices of those who had been called to eternal rest.

“It is also a time to ensure that those who continue to serve our communities are given our full support.”

Families and friends of the departed 20 officers laid wreaths to honour their memories during the event held at the Police Special Response Unit in Nasinu.
