Three of the 10 leptospirosis deaths recorded in the country occurred on Vanua Levu, says Health Minister Dr Ifereimi Waqainabete.

He said his team would continue to work closely with communities to control the number of cases. He added the ministry was not only focused on leptospirosis but on dengue fever and typhoid as well.

Dr Waqainabete also applauded communities for their response towards the issue.

“The community’s response towards dealing with leptospirosis, dengue and typhoid has been positive,” he said.

“This shows that the community has adhered to our advice through the awareness programs carried out and it’s encouraging.

“I believe everyone in Fiji has come to the realisation about the importance of preventing these diseases, however, the ministry continues to advocate these issues making sure that we also eat well which includes vegetables and fruits.”

Dr Waqainabete said his team also worked with communities including farmers to ensure they wore or used protective clothing and equipment while working on their farms.
