A woman whose husband is battling cancer has encouraged families and caregivers of cancer patients to not lose hope.

Teresia Vakalala, 47, of Cunningham Rd, Suva is a breadwinner whose life is fraught with challenges.

Her husband, Emosi Vakalala, is diagnosed with a type of blood cancer and is admitted at the CWM Hospital.

Speaking at the Bushells Fiji’s Biggest Morning Tea event at the Motibhai Group Suva office in Walu Bay yesterday, she shared she was going through a difficult time.

“It’s very challenging,” she said. “It’s hard because I am the sole breadwinner in the family.

“Some of the challenges I face are the sleepless nights trying to get my husband comfortable. He is in so much pain and is unable to do things he was able to do.

“We understand the pain he is going through and help him fight the disease.”

Mrs Vakalala said her husband developed pain in his leg and last year it was confirmed that he had multiple myeloma.

She said through chemotherapy her husband was able to sit down and move his legs with the help of a physiotherapist.

Mrs Vakalala said family support was quite important during difficult times. Mrs Vakalala thanked the Fiji Cancer Society for their help.

The Bushells Fiji’s Biggest Morning Tea event is held annually to raise funds to assist cancer patients and to raise awareness on cancer.
