Farmers and family members who fall sick at Vucivuci subdivision outside Savusavu Town have learned to use their faith in God for healing, especially when bad farm road condition are inaccessible.

Solopua Vula, who has been a farmer for 30 years in the area, said the road condition had never changed.

“If you fall sick at night and get serious and when vehicles can’t travel the roads, then all we do is pray and trust God for his healing until we can walk to the hospital in the morning,” he said.

“Every year we fix the farm roads ourselves when it gets worse and there have been times when we have had to supply the gravel and widen the road.

“Our expectant mothers are reminded to move to town a month before they give birth and some sick farmers stay in town until they get better, then return home.

“We are worried about our children and grandchildren who need to attend school this week and that is why we are working on the farm roads so they can get to school.”

Acting Commissioner Northern Uraia Rainima said the farm road program was handled by the Ministry of Agriculture.

Questions emailed to Agriculture Minister Dr Mahendra Reddy on June 22, 23, 25 and 26 remained unanswered when this report went to press last night.
