New Zealand’s Ministry of Primary Industries has said camouflage grouper fish (Kawakawa) imported from Fiji and sold from an outlet in Christchurch is poisonous.

“We’re warning the public not to eat frozen, imported camouflage grouper (Kawakawa) fish sold from Krazy Price Mart Ltd, 413 Tuam Street Christchurch between 10 March and 21 May 2020,” said a Ministry statement.

“It should not be eaten as it contains ciguatoxin, which may cause ciguatera poisoning after consumption. Krazy Price Mart Ltd are recalling this product.”

The ministry has advised anyone having concerns about their health after eating any of the affected fish to seek medical advice.
