Former New Zealand foreign minister, Murray McCully, has been recruited to help Niue access more aid in the wake of the Covid-19 global pandemic.

Both New Zealand and Australia have already provided the island, which is largely dependent on tourism, with some assistance.

BCN reported the government approached Mr McCully a few weeks ago.

The Secretary of Government Peleni Talagi said Mr McCully was a friend of Niue who occasionally provided advice and assistance as an unofficial advisor.

She said he was currently assisting in approaching donors to deal with the impact of Covid-19.

Mr McCully was not being paid for the work.
