Fiji’s Attorney-General and Minister for Economy Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum has encouraged employers in the Suva and Lautoka lockdown areas to assist their employees access Fiji National Provident Fund (FNPF) monies.

He said they had found that some employers were hesitant to assist their workers access FNPF COVID-19 assistance because they were late in their FNPF contributions.

The A-G said the FNPF has agreed to process employees’ applications even if their employers had compliance issues.

Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said they were aware that some employees faced issues with employers because of this.

“Employers have not been very forthcoming,” he said.

“One of the reasons for that, we have seen, is that some employers have been late in their FNPF contributions and that’s why they have been hesitant to come forward.

“In our discussions with FNPF, FNPF has agreed that they will still process those applications, notwithstanding the fact that these employers have been late in their payments or have had some compliance issues.

“For the time being, in any case, we are more focused on ensuring that employees get their letters, get their forms filled up by the employers so that they can access those funds.”
