The National Disaster Management Office has activated the National Emergency Operation Center (EOC) in anticipation of the Tropical Cyclone Harold that is heading towards the Fiji group.

“We are advising those living in the Eastern and Western Division to move into the Evacuation provided before nightfall. Our team is also aware of the protocols that need to be properly monitored when evacuation is taken place,” NDMO stated.

“This is a collective effort that we will carry out with our Divisional Officers on the ground. We will work closely with the Ministry of Health and our First Responders in making sure that ‘Physical Distancing’ is still being practiced in the Evacuation Centers.”

The Ministry of Health has given NDMO guidance on what they require in making sure that our people are safe from the cyclone and COVID-19.

Members of the public are kindly requested to take precautions and adhere to advisories given by the Fiji Met and NDMO.

“Please know your emergency disaster plan, include persons living with disabilities and children in your disaster plan. Listen for emergency instructions, check all family members are present, watch for rapidly rising floodwater, store drinking water in sealed plastic containers (water supply may be interrupted), move livestock to higher ground, move households items to higher levels, evacuate if necessary when it is safe to do so, turn off electricity at the main switch before evacuating.”

Motorists and pedestrians are strongly advised against crossing flooded roads and footpaths.

NDMO is emphasizing that if you’re living in low lying areas, move to your nearest Evacuation Center when it is still daylight.

Those living on the coastal areas are also advised to move to higher grounds as we are anticipating heavy swells and storm surges.
