Adhering to the nationwide curfew is now a “matter of life and death”.

These were the words of Police Commissioner Brigadier-General Sitiveni Qiliho.

Brig-Gen Qiliho said people breaching the nationwide curfew and social restrictions needed to understand they were not only breaking the law, but were risking the lives of others by possibly spreading COVID-19 and, as seen globally, spreading death.

“This is the reality of the situation that we are in as a nation, and everyone must understand that this is not an ordinary curfew-like others previously enforced, as one person’s failure to respect and adhere to the nationwide curfew is now a matter of life and death,” he said.

More than 100 people were arrested for breaching the nationwide curfew on Saturday night.

Included in the list were 24 people hauled in for breaching the ban on social gatherings.

Brig-Gen Qiliho said the 24 were arrested because they were found drinking yaqona and holding drinking parties.

The Western Division recorded the highest number with 49 arrests, followed by 25 in the South, 31 in the East, three in the central and two in the Northern Division, bringing the total number of curfew breach arrests to 110.
