Three police officers were arrested for breaching the curfew hours by drinking kava at the Colo-i-Suva Community Post yesterday.
Fiji’s Commissioner of Police Brigadier-General Sitiveni Qiliho confirmed that a security guard was also arrested with the three police officers.
Brig-Gen Qiliho said as the number of people arrested for breaching curfew hours decreased from the 110 to 21 in comparison to the last 24-hour, there was an increase in the number of social gathering breaches.
“A total of 61 arrests were made for both the breach of curfew hours and social gatherings, which included three police officers,” he said.
“Forty people were arrested for breaching social gathering restrictions.”
Brig-Gen Qiliho said eight people were also arrested in Nabua after they were allegedly found drinking yaqona in a grog shop.
“In Lautoka, four youths who were found gathering under a mango tree were warned to disperse, but allegedly refused to do so and were arrested.
“We have a zero-tolerance policy and enough awareness has been conducted on what everyone needs to do and we will not be accepting any excuses.
“Police officers flouting these measures will feel the full brunt of the law and will also face our internal disciplinary measures.”
