THE State will go ahead with the murder charge against a father who allegedly threw a concrete block at his four-month-old baby during a domestic argument.

The incident, which happened last year in Nabua, Suva, allegedly resulted in her death.

Tevita Kunawave is charged with one count of murder and appeared before Justice Daniel Goundar yesterday.

Assistant Director of Public Prosecutions Elizabeth Rice told the court the prosecution would maintain the murder charge despite the defence making submissions to have the charge reduced to manslaughter.

Ms Rice told the court that the accused had earlier pleaded not guilty to the charge of murder and the defence had indicated the accused would plead guilty for manslaughter.

She said the prosecution was objecting to bail on the grounds that the alleged offence took place in a domestic setting and the seriousness of the offence.

She highlighted that witnesses in the matter were all known to the accused and the level of interference would be high.

The accused was further remanded.

The matter has been adjourned to March 6 for bail ruling.
