The new $5.8 million Rakiraki market could be opened in two weeks’ time. Minister for Local Government Premila Kumar inspected final works at the market and met vendors yesterday.

“You can see that some work is still ongoing and we are hoping to get the completion certificate this week then we can do the opening the following week.

“So it’s dependent on the completion certificate,” she said. “Sometimes people have the funny idea that it’s the municipal council making it and it’s the same people, hell no.”

She said the Occupational Health Safety department, Ministry of Health, National Fire Authority and project engineers had to inspect the building and give their approvals.

Mrs Kumar met executives of the Rakiraki Market Vendors Association and heard some of their concerns.

“The ratepayers here are very considerate,” she said.

“They don’t want tiles and they want the floor to be polished and they want the table to remain the size it is.”
