Bilateral discussions between between Israel and the Pacific region began this morning behind closed doors at the Pacific Islands Leaders Summit being held at Pullman Resort in Nadi.

Israel President Reuven Ruvlin is also attending the meeting.

He and six regional leaders were traditionally welcomed by Fiji’s Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama and members of the Royal Fiji Military Forces.

Discussions are expected to revolve around Israel’s presence in the Pacific and their diplomatic relationships.

Israel’s technological advancements in the area of agriculture will also be discussed .

Israeli Ambassador to the Pacific Tibor Shalev Schlosser had said agriculture was an important sector for the country.

“We have made very important steps in this sector and one of our breakthrough systems was the drip irrigation system which was invented by an Israeli called Simcha Blass and he came up with this very simple way of making sure there was precise amount of water that went into vegetables and crops in a farm,” he said.

“Nowadays the system is now digitalized and we can measure the exact amount of water that is going into each plant.

“That is all part of our agriculture programs that we are willing to share with our Pacific partners.”
