THE chief executive officer of the Fiji Association of Sports and National Olympics committee Lorraine Mar confirmed that karate will be the only new sport that is likely to join Team Fiji to the Olympic Games in Japan.

“For the first time Team Fiji has someone from Karate who has the potential to qualify because the other sports were there in 2016 except for karate,” she said.

Karate Fiji is likely to send a male athlete to participate in the qualifying course in May and he needs to meet the criteria of the Games and must improve his rankings.

Karate Fiji’s Laverne Qiolevu said the athlete they had chosen has been participating at K1 premier events, and the Oceania Championship earlier this year which has helped improve his ranking considerably.

“For this to continue, he must participate at similar events in the months leading up to the final May, 2020 qualifier,” she said.

Meanwhile only Team Fiji Rugby sevens men and women have qualified for Tokyo, 2020 Olympic Games

Other sports hoping to qualify for the 2020 Olympic Games from Fiji include Athletics, Archery, Table Tennis, Shooting and Swimming.
