LEGAL Aid Commission support staff members were reminded of the importance of maintaining a character of integrity and transparency while they served under Fiji’s largest law firm.
While speaking to participants of the Legal Aid Commission Corporate Workshop in Natadola over the weekend, Attorney-General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum said each officer should have the ability to report a colleague who engaged in illegal activities.
“All of you have been here for the past two days and of course you have developed friendships with your colleagues, but tomorrow if one of you takes a bribe will the person next to you, will they have the integrity to stand up and go and report that person,” Mr Sayed-Khaiyum questioned.
“That is the real test of the organisation.
“That is what I mean by having integrity within the organisation at all times.
“Organisations that don’t do that actually become hollow after a certain time.”
He said self-reflection was vital for the support staff to understand their role in the organisation.
“The fact is you are part of a very large organisation comparatively which means that you always have to be self-reflective.
“You have to ensure that you continue to maintain high levels of integrity.
“You also have to be self-reflective in the sense that one of your colleagues goes off the rails and you believe that they are corrupt then you should have the will to take action against that.
“We have seen or read books about this and I myself have experienced it over the past couple of years that organisations or people that deliver public service have become quite hollow and they have no longer become relevant in terms of delivery of quality service.”
Mr Sayed-Khaiyum closed the two-day workshop that was held at the InterContinental Fiji Golf Resort and Spa.
