MOST of the 2612 evacuees who occupied the 65 evacuation centres in the North have returned home.

Acting Commissioner Northern Uraia Rainima said teams were sent out yesterday morning to monitor the situation at the various centres.

“From Friday, we had a total of 49 centres in Cakaudrove with 2190 evacuees, seven in Bua with 152 people and nine in Macuata with 270 evacuees,” Mr Rainima said.

“We have also started our inspection in areas that lie in the path of TC Tino and we are working within 48 hours to complete the assessments.

“It was good to see most people adhering to the weather advice although there were some who chose otherwise. But overall, we managed to clear the towns for the sake of peoples’ safety.”

Mr Rainima said the supply of electricity and water were closely monitored to ensure that people were not affected.

“There were no reports of flooding except for roads,” he said.

“Our assessment teams in Bua and Cakaudrove have also gone out to villages to assess possible damage but we are blessed that the cyclone moved away from Vanua Levu.

“We will continue to monitor the situation.”
