PARENTS and guardians are strongly urged to get young children vaccinated against measles if they have not done so during the previous phase of the immunisation campaign.

The Ministry of Health and Medical Service’s Head of Health Protection, Dr Aalisha Sahu Khan, says these are children between the ages of six months to five years.

“What we are noticing in some of the preliminary data that we are getting back from the Central Division is that this age group is getting less vaccinated than the older age group. We have a higher percentage of people between the ages of 19 to 39 who are coming forward to get vaccinated but a bit lower for children between the ages of six months to five years,” Dr Sahu Khan said.

She said these young children are the most vulnerable when it comes to contracting measles and have higher chances of complications caused by it.

Meanwhile, the ministry is expanding the measles immunization campaign across Fiji.
