AS the festive season is here, the Fiji Police Force has expressed concerns about the high number of road accidents recently reported and the need for parents to ensure the supervision of their children at all times.

In a statement yesterday, police urged members of the public to be mindful of their children’s safety following a number of road accidents over the weekend.

Police said it had continued to record quite a number of serious accidents in the past week.

According to police, an eight-year-old child was allegedly hit by a minibus on Saturday afternoon near the Navua Bridge.

Police confirmed the victim was waiting for her aunt with a few others near the bridge when she suddenly crossed the road.

“She is currently admitted at the CWM Hospital. The driver has been questioned and released pending investigations,” police said.

In a second incident, a four-year-old girl living in Cunningham, Suva was allegedly hit by a vehicle driven by a 33-year-old man after she suddenly crossed the road.

“She is also admitted at the CWM Hospital.”

In the third incident, a 57-year-old man from Rabulu in Tavua is also admitted in hospital after he was involved in an accident on Saturday.

Police said the victim, who was a passenger of a vehicle with three others including the driver, was heading towards Tavua Town when the driver allegedly lost control of the vehicle causing it to veer off the road and hit a lamppost.

“Other passengers including the driver were treated and sent home while the victim is still admitted at the Tavua Hospital.”

In a separate incident, a 60-year-old man was injured when the bus he was driving was alleged to have collided with a vehicle driven by a 32-year-old man along Jerusalem Rd in Nabua, Suva on Saturday night.

“Three passengers of the car and the driver sustained injuries in the process and all are admitted at the CWM Hospital.”

Police are reminding drivers to be more vigilant on the road and abide by road rules at all times.

“Police are concerned with the high number of accidents reported almost on a daily basis and as children are home for their holidays we are again emphasising the importance of supervision.”
