DIFFICULTIES faced by Fijians to have access to affordable and climate-resilient housing will soon be a thing of the past.

The announcement to assist low and middle-income families was revealed at the recent 21st Attorney-General’s Conference at Natadola’s InterContinental Fiji Golf Resort and Spa.

International Finance Corporation, World Bank Group has taken the lead charge in the project through its public-private partnership with Government.

IFC investment officer Ritesh Vij said they were working with Government to design a public-private partnership project for developing affordable and climate-resilient housing for low and middle-income families.

“In this regard, the government of Fiji has selected six sites in the Central and Western divisions to have a sufficient scale to attract an international developer who can bring in innovative and sustainable construction technology in Fiji,” Mr Vij said.

“Under the PPP model, a private developer will be selected through a transparent and competitive bidding process.

“It would then be required to design and develop housing units of different typologies on all the selected sites.”

Mr Vij was one of the four speakers who spoke on the topic Property Opportunities-Strata Title Ownership.

He said the strata format was important because it could help curb urbanisation, decongest informal settlements, free up precious land for open spaces, improve quality of housing and help meet the public demand in the rising cost of land.

Strata title allows individual ownership of part of a property combined with shared ownership in the remainder area through a legal entity called the owners corporation or body corporate or strata company or community association.
