THREE police officers will be produced in the Suva Magistrates Court today over allegations of brutality on a suspect.
In a statement yesterday, police spokeswoman Ana Naisoro said the Director of Public Prosecutions office has sanctioned that all three police officers be charged.
They face one count of act intended to cause grievous harm according to Section 255 (a) of the Crimes Act 2009.
“A thorough investigation was conducted and also uncovered was an alleged case of bribery whereby the charge of perverting the cause of justice is likely to be explored,” said Ms Naisoro.
Manasa Rayasidamu accused police officers of torturing him last week after taking him from a friend’s home to the Pacific Harbour Police Post.
He claimed hot water was poured on his back which resulted in burns.
Fiji Human Rights and Anti-Discrimination Commission director Ashwin Raj said excessive force was used during the arrest and interrogation of Mr Rayasidamu who remains hospitalised at the
Navua Hospital.
Earlier yesterday, the commission said it would submit its full report to the Fiji Police Force and lodge a formal complaint of assault causing actual bodily harm pursuant to Section 275 of the Crimes Act and the use of excessive force in circumstances of the arrest pursuant to Section 10 (3) of the Criminal Procedure
Act.
