LOCAL Government Minister Premila Kumar says Government wants to “get rid of all bylaws and convert them into regulations”.
She said there was no single policy within the Ministry of Local Government to guide how market vendors operated in municipal markets.
She made the comment while delivering welcoming remarks for the newly-appointed special administrators at a ceremony in Suva yesterday.
Mrs Kumar said the ministry would begin standardising all their policies and processes.
“Currently, we don’t have a single policy to guide how the market vendors are operating in markets, we don’t have a single policy that guides procurement processes,” she said.
Mrs Kumar said there was a need to develop policies.
“We want to develop all that. We want to get rid of all the bylaws and convert them into regulations.”
Mrs Kumar said the ministry would also decentralise development approval.
“We need some restructuring within the current projects and as well in municipal councils.
“If we decentralise, then town and country planning can focus mainly on the policy aspects of master planning.”
