THE Fiji Navy has revealed the name of its latest class patrol boat that will be given to them by the Australian government.

RFNS Savenaca is under construction in Perth, Western Australia.

Fiji Navy Commander Capt Humphrey Tawake visited the Henderson shipyard last week to inspect the new vessel.

In 2014, Australia had announced it would deliver patrol boats to 12 Pacific Island countries.

RFNS Savenaca is the first naval ship to be named after a former naval seaman Savenaca Naulumatua who was a Fiji Naval Volunteer during World War II.

He was a crew member on HMNZS Leander that was hit by a Japanese torpedo at the Battle of Kolombangara in July, 1943.
