Indigenous owners interested in an eco-tourism site

INDIGENOUS owners of the Naiqoro Marine Reserve, Kadavu, want to turn the area into an eco-tourism site.

Matasalevu village headman Uraia Korobiau said hotels in Kadavu were already using the reserve area as a dive site and paid a fee to qoliqoli (traditional fishing rights) owners.

However, he said the deal needed to be formalised so that money could be channelled into a trust fund to benefit everyone equally.

“There have been in talks with the Ministry of Fisheries and the hoteliers operating here in Kadavu and the plan is soon to be implemented,” he said.

“We are looking at charging $15 per diver that visits the reserve site.
