YAP, 16 OCTOBER 2019 (THE GUAM DAILY POST) – The Federated States of Micronesia’s national government confirmed Tuesday that Rachelle Bergeron, an American citizen working for the FSM state of Yap as the state’s acting attorney general, has died.
Her death “was the result of an alleged homicide,” the national government stated.
“The State of Yap, with the assistance of the FSM Department of Justice and the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation, are coordinating efforts to complete a thorough investigation,” the national government stated.
The acting attorney general of Yap state was shot outside of her home Monday night.
The victim was shot by a single suspected shooter, according to information released by a police spokesperson.
A friend of the family shared the heartbreaking news on Facebook that Bergeron’s husband and neighbours rushed her to the hospital following the shooting, but they were unable to revive her. The friend writes that Bergeron and her husband were getting ready to celebrate their one-year anniversary.
Police in Yap are investigating. A motive behind the deadly shooting is still unknown.
According to Yap State Government Public Information Service, Bergeron was hired as an assistant AG in Yap in August 2015. She was promoted to acting AG in January.
The Guam attorney general’s office offered sympathy to the victim’s family during this difficult time.
“We are saddened by the loss of a member of the attorney general community. We respect that there is an ongoing investigation and stand ready to assist our law enforcement counterparts in any way possible should it be needed,” the Guam AG’s office stated.
