ILLEGAL fishermen and those involved in unregulated fishing practices were put on notice after Government commissioned the patrol vessel Dua Lei Ranima at the Lautoka Fisheries Wharf on Tuesday.

Fisheries Minister Semi Koroilavesau said the boat would be used to patrol Western Division waters and assist fish wardens in monitoring their qoliqoli as well as carrying out awareness in the outer islands of the division.

“The birth of this initiative began a few years ago when the Ministry of Fisheries realised the importance of equipping divisions with assets or patrol craft that have the capacity to cover our vast areas of operation,” he said.

Mr Koroilavesau added that continuous improvement in technology, illegal fishermen had always been a step ahead of authorities.
