A NEW pastoral program has been launched by the Ministry of Agriculture to grow a juncao grass – a type of pasture that could withstand long periods of dry weather.

Minister for Agriculture Dr Mahendra Reddy said 50 tonnes of 80kilograms of juncao grass was transported to the Western Division last week.

“The first shipment was transported to Suva and distributed to 50 farmers while another shipment was given to another group in the West,” he said.

“This pasture is not planted in the paddock where the cattle are but they are grown separately, cut and carried to where the animals are.”
