THE Fiji National Sports Commission chairperson Peter Mazey presented a cheque for $2,546,000 to the Fiji Rugby Union for the Fiji Airways Flying Fijians squad to prepare for the Rugby World Cup in Japan next month.
Present during the sponsorship at the ANZ Stadium was the Fiji Airways Flying Fijians head coach John McKee and Fiji Rugby Union chief executive officer John O’Connor.
O’Connor said the sum that was given by the government adds up all the preparations the team has been doing since November last year.
“It has been highlighted the grants totaling to $2.5m has been an ongoing government support to World Rugby for preparation of the national team to the Rugby World Cup next month.
“It started from the November tour last year and the Test matches that followed including the Pacific Nations Cup and the Test match against Tonga before the World Cup.
“This morning we signed another agreement with the commission for another $650,000 for the players as they journey to Japan for a month,” said O’Connor.
McKee acknowledged the Fijian government for continuing in believing in them as they prepare for the world event in Tokyo, Japan.
“We wouldn’t be running this team preparation if it wasn’t the support from the government and we would like to say vinaka on behalf of the team and the management,” McKee said.
Meanwhile, Mazey wishes all the best to the players as they travel to represent Fiji in Japan next month.
“This cheque we are presenting today (yesterday) is government commitment to the preparation and participation of our Flying Fijians to Japan,” said Mazey.
