THE Minister for Infrastructure Jone Usamate has refused to respond to comments by Goundar Shipping Limited on the lack of quality seafarers in Fiji.

When approached at the Fiji Commerce and Employers Federation members’ forum in Suva today, he said that he would need to see the content of his comments before making a comment.

“I am going to comment until I read his submissions because I need to know what he was talking about,” Mr Usamate said.

Meanwhile, shipping company’s director George Goundar told the Parliament Standing Committee on Natural Resources on Thursday, that the Government needed to urgently look into the quality of seafarers in Fiji.

He claimed the Fiji Maritime Academy has failed to produce seafarers who are disciplined and well versed with their roles.

Fiji Maritime Academy chief executive officer Mahesa Abeynayake said the comments made Goundar was irrelevant.
