State wants firm back in action

GOVERNMENT is interested in seeing the Nabou Green Energy Ltd back in operation as soon as possible, Attorney-General and Economy Minister Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum said last night.

“In the interest of supporting the cleanest possible energy mix for Fiji, we obviously are keen to see the Nabou Green Energy Ltd biomass power plant resume operations,” he said in response to queries from this newspaper.

“Regardless of who holds the shares in NGEL, it’s important that we have a diverse range of renewable energy power sources operating in the country, to help us reduce our carbon footprint and reliance on expensive fossil fuel.”

On Tropik Wood’s decision to surrender its 25 per cent stake in NGEL, Mr Sayed- Khaiyum said it was not Government’s role to interfere with the commercial decision-making of any private company.

When he commissioned NGEL in July, 2017, the A-G had said the NGEL plant marked another step towards Fiji’s plan to have 99 per cent of its electricity needs sourced from renewable energy by 2030.

Shareholders in NGEL include Tropik Wood Industries Ltd, Gimcao Company Ltd, GS Power Co Ltd and Mirae Asset Daewoo Ltd.

Yesterday Tropik Wood confirmed it had surrendered its free 25 per cent stake because NGEL was unable to source fuel and consistently produce electricity since August, 2017.
