WOMEN leaders need to build trust, and have respect for people in their community, says Assistant Minister for Women, Children, Poverty Alleviation Veena Bhatnagar.
This was her message while closing the building resources in democracy governance and elections training at Nadave in Tailevu on Friday.
The workshop consisted of 29 women participants who were leaders in their communities within the Eastern Division.
Ms Bhatnagar said being a woman leader was not an easy task as social and stereotypes still existed for women in communities. Government, she said ensured that no woman was left behind and they access equal opportunities to men.
“As women leaders, we need to build trust, we need to be credible and have respect among our members and the community. We must live up to our promises,” Ms Bhatnagar said.
She said the training would ensure the participants were equipped to be better leaders and more capable to speak out for the women they represented at different forums.
“Being more empowered now, you would want to be a member of any of the village development committees, or a member of the development boards at your various tikina or yasana and or even take up the challenge of being a candidate in the next election.”
