FIJI will need to improve its performances if it is to successfully defend its title next weekend at the HSBC Vancouver 7s, coach Gareth Baber says.
After a sixth place finish in Las Vegas, Baber is confident that his team could do this.
“We came here last year with the same expectations and didn’t get what we wanted and we went on and won in Vancouver, we have got the very much process in mind,” Baber said after his team’s 14-19 loss to England.
“Obviously, the ultimate goal is the gold and sometimes you make two steps forward and two steps back,” Baber said.
“That’s what we all do as coaches to try and develop that capability to beat anybody and we have shown in our time that we can beat anybody.
“But it’s forming that consistency to do it time after time which is the big process
“We will continue to work on that.”
There are five more tournaments left in the World Sevens Series.
The easiest but difficult task of finishing top of the series and becoming world champion is to win the remaining tournaments earning 22 points at each and giving Fiji 195 points.
Baber’s winning consistency process will need to come into play. Finishing world champion means going into the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games as the number one seed.
But as we are still half way out, the top four finishers cannot be determined yet the top two are slowing pulling away.
USA now leads with 98 points, followed by New Zealand with 93 points and then Fiji with 84 points.
England has moved to fourth position with 68 points, one point ahead of South Africa.
Australia is in sixth place with 57 points.
