THE iTaukei society is such that only men should take up leadership roles, says newly inducted Rampur College head girl in Navua Claudette Tuicama.
The 18-year-old hopes that her appointment would be an inspiration to other young iTaukei girls not to fear taking on leadership roles in their respective schools.
She would be working closely with the newly appointed head boy Ratu Orisi Basituka and prefects to assist teachers in maintaining order in a school of close to 400 students.
“Its an honor to be appointed the school head girl and mostly importantly to be a good role models for my students,” Claudette said.
She aims to pursue a Bachelors of Commerce in Accounting and Economics at the University of the South Pacific after completing high school.
“I have a lot of expectations from my parents to perform in school. My advise to young iTaukei girls is to take up leadership roles in their schools because the mentality is such that only men can take up this role,” Claudette said.
She is eldest of three siblings with maternal links to Rotuma.
