TWO villages in the province of Cakaudrove have taken extreme measures to address the theft of yaqona by imposing a five-year ban on anyone from the village found guilty of stealing.

The villagers of Mataikoro and Bagasau in the district of Nakobo have taken it upon themselves to address the issue of yaqona theft in the district.

Cakaudrove Provincial Council chairman Ratu Jekesoni Yavalanavanua said such options had been adopted because of the worsening situation.

“We are working with the police but nothing seems to change so village leaders decided to vacate those found guilty of grog theft.

“In Somosomo, Taveuni, we have the same rule for those who mix homebrew in the village boundary and get drunk and disorderly.”
