THE Retired Fijian Teachers Association (RFTA) says Government must work in collaboration with stakeholders of faith-based governed schools.

RFTA vice-president Peceli Rinakama said it was imperative for Government to look at the proposals made by faith-based organisations to consider faith as a merit when considering appointments of heads of schools.

Mr Rinakama said the Government must take into account the contributions that faith-based organisations had made to the education sector.

He said faith could not be compromised and it was something that people felt strongly about. Mr Rinakama further added that consultation was important and that was something that was missing at this stage.

The Fiji Principals Association and the Fiji Head Teachers Association refused to comment on this issue when they were contacted on Tuesday.

The Catholic Church of Fiji, the Methodist Church in Fiji and Rotuma and also the Seventh-day Adventist Church have come out strongly to request Government to consider their proposal on the appointments of heads of schools.

During a meeting on Thursday last week with Catholic schools stakeholders, the permanent secretary for the Ministry of Education, Alison Burchell, said all schools would be opened to all faiths for students and also teachers.
