THE Nadi Taxi Association claims the Fiji Roads Authority’s traffic management system in the central business district area is costing passengers extra dollars in taxi fares.

Association president Vasu Nair also said the first impression tourists from Denarau had of Nadi Town was Prince Charles Park and back alleyways.

“We are not happy about the one-way streets they have introduced because it is costing passengers more money in taxi fares and this is affecting our business,” he said.

“And the first thing tourists coming from Denarau see of Nadi Town is the side streets, Prince Charles Park and the back alleys – it’s not the best way to introduce them to Nadi.

“The old system was good because the first thing they would see was Main St with all the shopping areas.

“If the FRA wanted to ease congestion then the simplest solution would have been to place more police in the town area to control pedestrian crossing.

“The biggest holdup for traffic was people crossing wherever and whenever they wanted to — especially during peak hours.”

In an earlier interview with this newspaper, FRA chief executive officer Jonathan Moore said the temporary traffic management system had proved to be successful and there were plans to make it a permanent fixture.
