Vanuatu PM Salwai survives no confidence vote

PORT VILA, 05 DECEMBER 2018 (RNZ PACIFIC) – The motion of no confidence in Vanuatu’s Prime Minister Charlot Salwai has been defeated.

A special session of parliament was called on Tuesday for the motion to be debated in the 52 seat house.

Despite opposition claims that the motion was supported by the majority of MPs, the clerk of parliament, Raymond Manuake, announced the motion had been defeated 31 votes to 19.

“Motion number 4 of 2018 on the purpose of moving a motion of no confidence against the prime minister of the Republic of Vanuatu the Honourable Charlot Salwai Tabimasmas was defeated by 31 votes against, 19 votes in favour and one abstention,” he said.
