A NADI contractor has promised to compensate a Lautoka property owner whose home and compound was inundated with water and mud from a development his company is involved in.

Fairdeal Earthmoving Contractors Ltd managing director Pramod Kumar said a special team had been sent to conduct clean-up work at the Kashmir property.

“It was very unexpected and my team has been there from yesterday (Sunday) and today (yesterday) cleaning up the debris and I have also assured the home- owner that we will compensate him for any damages,” he said.

Mr Kumar added that concerns raised by residents located adjacent to the development had also been addressed. Peter Michael Swami said his home and compound were inundated with mud and water on Saturday during a heavy downpour.

“I have tenants at the property and it will be a big problem for me if they decide to move out because of what has happened,” he said.

“At about 1pm Saturday, water and mud from the Housing Authority development came rushing down along with some big rocks.

“The rocks blocked the drainage outlet and the sludge came into my property and even entered the house.”

Mr Swami said he was discussing compensation with Fairdeal, but called for a more detailed study on the future impact the development would have during rainy weather.

Denise Gibson, a Kashmir resident whose home borders the development, said she was concerned that future downpours could result in damage to the retaining wall on her property.

The issue was highlighted in an article in September this year, however, no remedial action was taken.
