UNFAVOURABLE weather failed to dampen the spirits of physically challenged students at the 2018 Fiji Council of Special and Inclusive Educators (FCOSIE) games at the ANZ Stadium in Laucala Bay, Suva.

Twenty-two schools from the Northern, Western, Eastern and Central divisions were part of the two-day event.

Central Eastern Council of Special and Inclusive Educators (CECOSIE) president Deepak Singh said the aim of the game was to help in the holistic development of a child.

“Through this annual meet we hope to help students build the relationship among peers with children from other schools, “It is an experience on its own for the students who come from the outer parts of Viti Levu and Suva. This is part of the holistic development of the child and from this children get to witness and build on their self-esteem, exploring their own talents and that is something we are trying to encourage,” said Singh.

Singh said the meet had a few differences with the previous years as they included inclusive schools which could bring in students who were not physically challenged. “This year the committee planned to include an extra 12 students from the inclusive schools.

“So from the 12 students there are six girls and six boys. We implemented this because it is an actual inclusive event as well so we included students who are not disabled to be part of the tournament,” said Singh.

Events in the competition include the 50 metre walk, 75 metre walk, 100 and 200 metre sprints, 800 and 1500 metres run. Field events are shot put and javelin while team games include soccer, table cricket and table tennis.

Competition continues today at the ANZ Stadium.
